Full Icon Tutorial 2

Full Icon Tutorial

I Personally think that this tutorial requires a basic knowledge of Gimp... What thinketh you?? Okey Dokey, here be my base pic...

I've already rotated it, as you can see, and I cropped it to my preferences and scaled it down... I sure hope you know how to do that.. if you don't, I'd perhaps choose another tutorial... :) THE BASE OF DOOM!

Alrighty! Lets bring out the icon's prettiness!! I've decided on a faded-type look... it's become quite popular lately... so - first, I used a lace brush by , they're fantabulous brushes.. check them out!

New Layer, and add it with a nice beige colour (#d7cfb4), and set the layer to "Soft Light", which you can barely see it on, but it gives some nice texture! Heehee... Now, for the fade part of the Faded look we're going for... lets get us a new layer, and add a nice dark blue with the fill tool, of course... (#013460) and set the layer to "Grain Extract"... Now I'm told that "Exclusion" gives some nice effects, but we don't have that mode in Gimp, so we'll manage without it! Nice Effect, lets keep going!

Ok, now we're going to prepare for the text! I really love taking a round brush, any size, and holding down shift while clicking, It gives you the option of a straight line! So, in white on a new layer, draw a line across the icon with any size brush you want, and experiment! I've set the layer to a 59% opacity, and left it at normal. There! Gorgeous! Another Pretty Brush by , this is a flower decoration!

New Layer, underneath our white line one, with the brush in a nice brown (#682c0e) and we'll leave the mode alone cause it looks good.

And now, for text. I just watched "Empire Strikes Back" today, and I decided yo use the words "there is another", all lower case, in Georgia ref at 10px. The colour is (#682c0e).

Now...for a Border! New layer Under the text so we'll see the text perfect... This is a border I've made myself.. you can make your own quite easily by making a new 100x100 document filled with black, taking the rect select tool and changing the settings of feathering to higher (depending on how much of a fade you want) then hitting Ctrl-K after selecting a section of the square... For more info talk to me after class (aka comment) Ok.. here's mine if you'd just like to use it, please credit if you use it for other icons (

Alrighty, I've put it on in white, and Here's our Finished project!

Hope you like! I'm saving it as a .png so it won't mess around with the layers. You can also save a copy as .xcf so that you can alter it later if you like! Just for Reference.. here's our finished Layers Dialog too!

If this was too confusing in any way... or you would like clarifiying on a certain part, Please tell me! Ask Questions!
